In Pokémon Contests, Dragon-type moves are typically Cool moves, but some may be Beautiful or Tough. When Misty Terrain is in the effect, the power of Dragon-type moves is decreased by 50% if the target is on the ground. As such, Dragon-type Pokémon rely on their high stats to do damage, with the type's lack of resistances and immunities allowing Dragon-type moves to deal a decent amount of damage in most situations. The Dragon type can only deal super-effective damage to itself, but only two types, the Fairy- and Steel-types, take reduced damage from it.

Dragon is tied with Ghost for being the least resisted type, and pairs well with Ground and Fire-type moves. In addition to having the highest base HP of all Pokémon, Dragon-type Pokémon have the highest average Special Attack of all Pokémon. Partly because of this, as of Generation VII, Dragon-type Pokémon have the highest average HP and base stat total of all types.

Many Dragon-type Pokémon are pseudo-legendary or Legendary Pokémon.
